L’UMR SESSTIM est rattachée à Aix-Marseille Université et demeure à ce jour la seule unité en dehors de la région Ile de France spécialisée en épidémiologie, biostatistique, sciences humaines économiques et sociales de la santé labellisée par l’INSERM et par l’IRD.
Le SESSTIM regroupe des équipes interdisciplinaires en sciences économiques et sociales, en épidémiologie sociale et en biostatistique et informatique médicale centrées sur des applications aux cancers, aux maladies infectieuses et transmissibles et aux maladies chroniques liées ou non au vieillissement.
Elle bénéficie d’une reconnaissance nationale et internationale tant dans les disciplines qu’elle met en œuvre (économie, épidémiologie, biostatistique, mathématique, géographie, informatique médicale, psychologie, sociologie, anthropologie) que sur les domaines d’application où elle intervient (cancer, VIH/sida, hépatites, paludisme et maladies infectieuses, prévention, évaluation des systèmes de santé dans les pays du Nord et du Sud).

Enseignements
Nous contribuons à la formation en sciences médicales et paramédicales dans différents niveaux d’études (PACES, DFGSM,…). Nous assurons notamment la responsabilité de l’UE4 (Évaluation des méthodes d'analyses appliquées aux sciences de la vie et de la santé) en PACES, de la formation informatique en DFGSM2, de l’UE Biomédecine quantitative en DFGSM3, de la formation statistique, épidémiologie, informatique en orthophonie et en orthoptie.
Nous avons la responsabilité de trois parcours du master Santé Publique d’Aix-Marseille Université, labélisés Académie d’Excellence (Idex Amidex ; Aix-Marseille Université) et qui bénéficient d’un partenariat avec l’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie dans le cadre de formations à distance. Nous formons ainsi des professionnels et des chercheurs dans les domaines suivants : « Méthodes Quantitatives et Econométriques pour la Recherche en Santé » (MQERS) ; « Santé Publique, Société Développement » (SPSD) ; « Artificial Intelligence for Public Health » (AI4PH). Près de 180 étudiants suivent chaque année ces formations, issus d’une trentaine de pays, majoritairement d’Afrique Francophone. Nous utilisons pour cela un modèle pédagogique innovant reposant sur l’utilisation des TICE permettant aux apprenants un suivi à distance de la formation avec des cours dispensés de manière synchrone et des activités asynchrones. Dans ce cadre, nous contribuons au développement d’innovations pédagogiques dans le domaine des TICE.
Nous avons également la responsabilité de Certificat d'Études Supérieures Universitaires (CESU), de Diplôme d'Université (DU), de Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures Universitaires (DESU) et Inter Universitaire (DESIU) dans les domaines de la biostatistique, de l’épidémiologie, de la méthodologie, de l’informatique médicale, de l’économie de la santé.
